Soft open points (SOPs) are power electronic devices that usually placed at normally of electricity distribution networks to provide flexible control the networks. This paper gives a comprehensive overview both academic research and industrial practice on SOPs in The topologies as multi-functional identified compared, which include back-to-back voltage source converters, multi-terminal unified flow controllers, direct AC-to-AC modular multilevel converters. is reviewed three aspects, i.e., benefit quantification, control, optimal siting sizing SOPs. quantification indices categorized into feeder load balancing, profile improvement, losses reduction, three-phase balancing DG hosting capacity enhancement. summarized three-level structure, where system-level converter-level further discussed.
